The College of Engineering of Gyeongsang National University is the biggest and most qualified college of engineering in Gyeongnam with 4 schools(3 majors)divisions and 6 departments of 120 professors and about 4,000 students.

School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Information Engineering KOR

(Dept. of Mechanical Engineering/ Dept. of Aerospace and Software Engineering)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1985. The department amis to educate strong mechanical engineers through the fundamental undergraduate course for the mechanical engineering related industries and also provide highly qualified researchers through the extensive graduate course for the research institutes or research centers of the related industries. The major industrial areas relevant to the mechanical engineering can be categorized to automative, aerospace, power generation, manufacturing and machinery production industries.

Also all the faculty staffs are prepared to educate students and contribute to this field through superior curriculum and research programs.

Our department goal is mainly to produce mechanical engineers who have basic knowledge of current mechanics as well as ability to understand mechanical systems and creatively solve the encountered application problems in the modern technological environments.

We offer profound courses for mechanical engineering with basic engineering mechanics, applied mechanics, thermal and fluids engineering, design and manufacturing engineering, automation and control. Specially, the capabilities to perform computer related system designs with IT technologies and to deal with experimental equipments are also emphasized.

Aerospace and Software Engineering is a rapidly advancing field that covers the fundamentals of design, manufacturing, and operation of vehicles moving above the earth’s surface, vehicles rang- ing from aircraft to helicopters, missile, and spacecraft. Design of such vehicles has always been challenging, mainly owing to the complicated and interdisciplinary nature of physical processes. Furthermore, it is still very difficult to meet the high standard requiring for producing cost-effective light-weight vehicles with good performance and reliability.

The department is located within 15 minutes driving distance from the Sachon aircraft industrial complex. For this reason, the department has been selected as one of the intensive supporting fields in the university’s long term development plan. Currently, it is the only aerospace and software program in country supported by the special program of the Ministry of Education.

The undergraduate curriculum at the department is designed to a clear understanding of the fundamental aspects of the fields that are essential to dealing with those challenging problems. The main focus of the program is to get the basic knowledge of subjects as well as the ability to solve problems in aerospace systems and software.

In addition to aerospace program and software program for master and Ph.D degree, BK21 Plus (Brain Korea 21 Program for Leading Universities & Students) program have successfully launched in the two special areas. Consequently, a converged education system is to be established for advanced engineers in aerospace and software engineering fields by participating CK (University for Creative Korea) project as well as cultivate engineers with the global minds through several international programs.

Division of Materials Science and Engineering KOR

(Dept. of Polymer Science and Engineering / Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering / Dept. of Ceramic Engineering)

Division of Materials Science and Engineering plays a leading role in the training and developing high level research personnel in advanced industrial fields in Korea as well as international researcher for the next generation of regional strategic business. Our division takes the total expenses to support more than one billion won in seven years, and graduate students were supported from the two-stage Brain Korea (BK21) project since 2006. In addition, Gyeongsang National University NURI (New University for Regional Innovation) (2004-2009), HUIC (Hub University for Industrial Cooperation) (2009-2011), and LINC (Leaders in Industry University Cooperation) (2012-now) projects were selected as participating division by on February, 2017 for supporting industrial training engineer and technical supporting in the factory practically. The division can be as the one of the top national rank due to sufficient research funding and vigorous research activity and therefore It is ready to upgrade to a world-class research group.

Division of Industrial and Systems Engineering KOR

(Industrial Engineering/Industrial Information Engineering)

Industrial engineering is a broad professional discipline concerning the analysis and design of systems and procedures for organizing the basic resource of production such as people, information, materials and equipment to achieve specific objectives. Also Industrial information Engineering is a unique engineering discipline that concerns topics on the analysis, design, implementation and management of enterprise information system to achieve the functional integrity and business competence based on the knowledge of relevant computer technology and industrial engineering.

The complexity of modern industrial organizations and the emphasis on increasing effectiveness, efficiency and productivity have led to growing need for industrial engineering. Industrial engineering serves a broad cross section of business, industry and institution, industrial engineers are now working in every kind of organization, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, mercantile and service.

During the course, the student will have through understanding on the most up to date technological topics such as the high level computer programming, system development methodology, database system, internet, multimedia system, production control and management, operation research and statistics etc. Industrial engineering programs were started in this university in 1985, with the first class graduating in 1989. The graduate programs pursuing to the higher degrees, Master of Science and Ph.D., were added in 1993 and 1996 respectively.

Division of Architectural, Urban and Civil Engineering KOR

(Professional Degree Program of architectural Engineering / Professional Degree Program of Urban Engineering / Professional Degree Program of Civil Engineering)

The architectural engineering division provides a solid educational environment for the study and practice of building engineering design and construction technologies. It has strong traditions of concern for human values and human safety and also for finding appropriate roles for architectural engineering in society. It is a good place where the individual engineering mind of a student can be cultivated and nurtured in a framework of values that is socially, and environmentally responsible.

We fully aware the need of activities addressing significant social, ecological, and environmental demands to building in today’s market, especially in the areas of structural engineering design, construction technology and environment, to advances in design practice and research. We also seeks to relate these demands to architectural engineering theory and practice.

We offers degree programs in the areas of structural design, building material & construction and environmental system technologies. Other opportunities for study within the division are also available through the industrial degree program.

The Urban Engineering(UE) was established in March, 1988 and the graduate program pursuing to the higher degree, Master of Science and Ph. D. were added in 1994 and 1997, respectively. The UE is seeking new tools to create our nation and cities as sustainable and smart ones. For these the UE tries to combine cutting-edge planning and management technologies.

The UE offers the programs of 7 major areas such as urban planning & development, urban design, national and regional planning, transportation engineering, surveying & GIS and environmental engineering. Research areas of the UE are the urban social policy planning and site planning, the traffic flow theory, highway and airport planning, the automatic construction of topographic information, cadastre surveying, application and database design of GIS, the environment planning, solid waste treatment, new town development, urban renewal, and etc.

As the town and city have continued to grow and expand, conflicts arise between the need of developing land and the need of preserving the natural environment. The UE has proposed effective guidances to solve such conflicts. The graduates of the UE are demanded from governments as well corporations in the whole country.

Civil engineering is the design, construction, and maintenance of public infra- structure such as roads, bridges, dams, and levees. It encompasses much of what defines modern civilization.

Its subdivisions include structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering, construction management, water resources engineering, water works engineering, etc. Civil engineers has been responsible for creating and maintaining the built environment.

Therefore, GNU’s civil engineering program has been focused on breeding the next generation of civil engineers with the goal of producing professionals up to the task of wise and efficient use of resources. The program was established in 1978 and has 6 faculty members, about 200 undergraduate, and 50 graduate students.

The graduate enjoy diversified opportunities of professions in the field of construction companies, national cooperations, research institutes, etc.

School of Architecture KOR

School of Architecture at GNU aims for growing internationally certified architects with fine intellectual creativity as well as fundamental awareness of socially responsible roles as global leaders. In order to meet the demand of society, we believe that massive engagement of our students follows various ways of contribution: leaders with good understanding of community and its direction and expert in scientific applications between architecture, liberal arts and social science.

Our institute operates a 5 year full-time undergraduate architecture program since 2002 to meet UIA(Union internationale des Architectes) education standards. Also, in 2010 our undergraduate program received the Certification of Architectural Education from KAAB (Korea Architectural Accrediting Board) as the first nominee in Gyongsang Namdo province The curriculum for the 5 year undergraduate program are:

Department of Electrical Engineering KOR

Our department was founded with the name of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in October, 1984 and rearranged with the name of Electrical Engineering in November, 1985. The graduate programs for M.S. degree and Ph.D. were opened in 1988 and 1993, respectively.

Electrical engineering deals the generation, supply, and utilizations of electricity. Based on the basic understanding of electrical engineering, we supply the high level courses in the fields of ‘System engineering’,

‘Electric machinery’ and ‘Electrical materials.’ The system engineering field covers ‘Automatic control’ and ‘Power systems’ etc,. the electric machinery field embraces ‘Electric machines’ and ‘Power electronics’ etc,. and the electrical materials field concerns with ‘Electrical materials’ and ‘Renewable energy systems’ etc.

We have been running ‘Electrical Engineering program of Accreditation for Engineering Education of Korea’. We are stressing the communication skills, engineer ethics, and management skills in addition to electrical engineering. Our students are receiving a variety of grants from KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). ECFC Scholarship Foundation etc.

Department of Electronic Engineering KOR

The Dept. of Electronics Eng. was formed in October 1984 under the name of Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and obtained the current name in November 1985. Since the first graduation in 1989, graduates from our department contributed to the most well-known companies such as Samsung, LG and other major companies as well as pursuing higher degrees in the department. Our department have been funded by many leading companies, government and research institutes including Samsung Electronics, LG, Ministry of Information and technology, Electronics and Telecommunications Research institute, Agency for Defense development, KAI, etc.

As of 2014, 7 faculty members are involved in educating and research with 220 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. In addition to leading in engineering and technology, our department will continuously educate students to become engineering leaders of Korea.

Department of Semiconductor Engineering KOR

The Department of Semiconductor Engineering, launched as the Dept. of Electronic Materials Engineering(EME) in 1988, had its first graduates in 1992. Later the relevant four departments were merged into a division of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1996, and the EME major was renamed as Information Technology Devices (ITD) in 2005. Since engineering is an area closely related to industry and the demand of specialized experts in the field of semiconductor technology is expanding, the name of the major was changed and the curriculum is restructured as a Department of Semiconductor Engineering in 2010. Industry of the next generation is expected to be the fusion of the technologies such as information technology(IT), nano technology(NT), biotechnology(BT), space technology(ST) and environment technology(ET). The semiconductor process, already adopted NT widely, can be combined with other technologies readily. Development of semiconductor electronic devices is essential for take-off of IT, BT and ST. Currently industry of Korea is led by semiconductor device and display. The students of SE gain Knowledge and skills of semiconductor process and display devices through the theoretical studies and experiments.

Also they are required to learn basics of electronic engineering, information and telecommunication engineering, computer engineering, and materials engineering to design and apply electronic devices. Department of SE emphasizes laboratory works such as electrical circuit design and test, and fabrication of semiconductor as well as display devices. The lab works are conducted in the well equipped labs including a cleanroom for semiconductor process and display device fabrication.

Master of engineering program was initiated in 1995 and the Ph.D. program in 1998 for training research personnels in the area of semiconductor devices, optomagnetic devices, information and telecommunication devices, electroceramic devices, sensors, IC design, image processing and telecommunication algorithms.

Department of Control and Instrumentation Engineering KOR

The curriculum of this department covers circuit theory, control theory, electronics, robotics, μ-processor, programming language, digital circuit, power electronics, motor control, embedded system, realtime operating system, and control & instrumentation engineering design. All the courses are focused on making students obtain substantially practical knowledges and abilities which can be used in the industrial fields.

Especially, this dept. runs to establish Control & Instrumentation Engineering Deepen Program based on accreditation system of engineering education. This program covers MSC, major liberal arts, basic major subjects, general major subjects, and deepen major subjects for our students to get initiative design abilities.

The research areas of faculties are follows; control of industrial robot, control theory and applications, image processing, development of digital controllers, motor control, power conversion system, flight control, embedded system, intelligent control, and green energy related renewable energy systems.

Department of Chemical Engineering KOR

Chemical engineering has traditionally contributed much to the growth of refinery, petrochemicals, organic/inorganic chemicals, fine chemicals and polymer industries. Issues on the need of interdisciplinary engineers on biotechnology and nano technology have also been forced to extend the field of chemical & biological engineering. Chemical engineering is the only engineering field that connects “life science” and “nano science” to the existing field of chemical engineering. The department was established in 1987 and has 7 full-time faculty members, 200 undergraduate students or more, and also offers graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The departmental mission is to nurture qualified engineers with practical knowledge of chemical science, life science, and nano science. The department offers undergraduate programs that include the education in the many core subjects such as applied biology, nano technology, biochemical engineering, unit operation, chemical reaction engineering, chemical engineering thermodynamics, mathematical methods for chemical engineering, etc.
