The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the pioneer in the foundation of Gyeongsang National University (GNU), was established in order to produce well-educated professionals who will work in the agricultural and bio-industrial fields. The college pursues the knowledge about the fundamental theories in both agricultural and life Sciences as well as their practical applications. The college has 78 professors involved in research and education. They educate agricultural experts to develop human resources and to contribute to the supply of safe food, cost-effective production in agricultural, forestry and livestock industry, the conservation of the natural environment and the proliferation of community services. The college is leading in Biotechnology studies (plant engineering, animal science, food and microbiological engineering, and agricultural environment engineering). The college was selected in the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) project in the field of agricultural life science. The college was re-selected in the 3rd phase Brain Korea 21 project. Also, the college was selected for the University for Creative Korea (CK-1). The potential of the College has been highly recognized.

The Department of Food & Resource Economics is the place where students learn how to analyze the social phenomena covering agriculture and related topics from economic perspectives. We focus on improving students' abilities to reason and explain the social phenomena based on economic logics. Students who are majored in this department may have flexibility to tackle with those problems confronted in each area. In the past, the research area was restricted to agriculture. Nowadays the research areas has extended to cover food, consumption, trade and development, regional economy, and environmental policy, etc. To cope with these social needs, this department also offers new curriculum to cover those topics.
Major of Bio-Industrial Machinery Engineering implements the education, research and development related to the design, production, utilization, management of machines and facilities for agricultural, animal, forestry and marine products including foods by applying the engineering principles to the fields of agricultural and life science. Also the subjects of energy production and utilization and environment control and management are included. The main branches of Bio-Industrial Machinery Engineering Major are agricultural power and natural energy, field machinery, bio-products and food processing machines, agricultural environment and facilities, new technology and information management. Recently, robots, non-destructive evaluating techniques, image processing, CAD & Graphics, machine automation, environment management and control technology, and biosensors are highlighted.
Major of Agricultural Engineering is the profession that applies the science of engineering principles to the improvement of the rural environment and the effective utilization of national land. This major includes basic fields of irrigation and drainage eng., agricultural land eng., farm structures and environment eng. The curriculum includes all the basic courses such as mathematics, physics, and mechanics common to engineering curricula, as well as specific courses in agricultural engineering such as surveying, hydrology, reinforced concrete, soil mechanics, and hydraulics, agricultural meteorology, irrigation and drainage, tidal land reclamation, construction methods, and farm structures. B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Eng. are offered. Opportunities to get government authorized professional licences, such as civil engineering, construction material testing, geodetic and / or cadastral surveyor are specially given to qualified agricultural engineering students.
Major of Forest Environmental Resources is expected to provide education, to conduct research and to supply other public services in forestry, forest biological sciences, forest-engineering, forest economics and policy, forest management and mensuration, forest protection, urban forest, forest recreation and wildlife, and landscape architecture. Programs range from basic to advanced applications in forestry, and students are able to choose from a wide range of specialties. Also, the Major offers programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
Major of Environmental Materials Science provides education on the manufacture and application of forest products in order to develop the higher value-added and eco-friendly materials. The education program includes ① Physical & chemical characterization of wood, ② Manufacture of wood-based materials (glulam, plywood, particle board, fiberboard, hybrid laminated materials etc.), ③ Eco-friendly furniture manufacture and interior design, ④ Construction and preservation of wooden house, ⑤ Manufacturing technology of pulp and paper, ⑥ Advanced materials & nano material based on cellulosic fibers, ⑦ Chemical conversion of woody biomass for wood extracts and bioethanol, ⑧ Cultivation of edible mushroom.
Department of Agricultural Plant Science, the first-established among the 81 departments of GyeongSangNational University, has focussed on improving crop production, germplasm evaluation and utilization, seed science and technology, and sustainable agriculture. The department has been concerned with improvement of the environment, crop production, optimum utilization of agricultural resources in farming systems, crop breeding and genetics. We conduct research and instruction on theories and technologies of growing, producing, and harvesting vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants, and of environmental control in horticultural production facilities. In order to promote plant use as elements of the nature in various human living environments, we also teach introduction to ornamental horticulture, life horticulture, floral design, and gardening and landscape plants. Our aim in education is to raise expert horticulturists who can contribute for the advancement of society by meeting the demand of high quality edible fresh produce (vegetable, fruits) and beautiful and pleasant ornamental plants (flowers, landscape plants). In the department, there are several laboratories, including labs of floriculture/plant tissue culture, landscape gardening/horticultural therapy, vegetable crops/plant physiology, protected horticulture, pomology/postharvest handling of horticultural products, and horticultural molecular breeding/horticultural seed production. The protected horticulture is our specialized research field and has been funded by many organizations such as the Ministry of Education and by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Currently Agricultural Meister University and floriculture WPL (work place learning) programs are running.
Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Food Science & Technology is the science where foods and food ingredients, which are essential for maintaining our life and social activities, are the subjects to be considered. The scope of the study includes the postharvest treatments of agricultural, marine, meats and dairy products, proper storage methods, processing technologies, distribution, and consumption. Foods serve not only to provid the necessary nutrients for man but also provide pleasure. Foods also play very important roles to maintain our health by providing many biofunctional components. Students study principles and techniques necessary for production of fermented foods, speciality foods, convenient foods, functional foods and processing foods which are increasingly demanded by contemporary man. Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Food Science & Technology(previously the agricultural chemistry department) studies fundamental areas of life sciences relevant to the biotechnology (BT) and environmental technology (ET). Life chemistry is an advanced applied science, emphasizing the fundamental scientific principles and theories for the production and regulation of living organisms and their biochemical processes. As a core major leading area in the agro-life science, we have built up infrastructure to teach the prospective students for both Masters and Doctoral Degrees in ET and BT areas. These specialization cover research and education program to develop biotechnology concerning to bioenergy, remediation of contaminated soil and water, functional material and proteomics.
The Department of Plant Medicine is an exciting place to study all aspects of plant disease and insects. Students will be able to study plant medical sciences, including plant pathology, applied entomology, weed science, and plant biotechnology. The science of plant medicine deals with the nature, causes, and control of plant pests (plant diseases, insects and weeds). Our department is committed to conducting research and education on microorganisms, plant pathogens, insects, nematodes, and weeds, which are major components of a natural ecosystem as well as obstacles in plant production. Our department programs are designed to allow students to learn maximum intellectual development and training for a multitude of futures, from plant medical sciences, to the biotechnology industry, to non-profit environmental work. The Plant Doctor (PD) Program is an intensive graduate-level program for students interested in plant health diagnosis and management. PD students often participate in applied research within laboratory programs, and may participate in the publication of peer-reviewed scientific and extension papers. In order to achieve successes in PD, our department offer great opportunities for cutting edge research training in key areas of plant physiology, plant pathology and applied entomology. The Department of Animal Science & Biotechnology offers an educational opportunity to play a pivotal role leading the 21st century in basic and applied animal biotechnology (BT) and nanotechnology (NT). The department provides Developmental Biotechnology through the development and application of somatic cell transfer and embryonic stem cells, Molecular Animal Nutrition and Anaerobic Microbiology to control animal physiology and cell signaling, Molecular Forage Biotechnology to develop new forage resources through the application of gene manipulation techniques, Dairy Microbiology and Dairy Food Nanotechnology to exploit functional dairy products and microbes by cutting-edge biotechnology. The goal of the Department of Animal Science & Biotechnology is to nurture students who can lead the animal industry in the 21st century through teaching, research, and extension that are animal biotechnology, reproductive physiology, breeding and genetics, animal feed and nutrition, animal management, metabolic regulation, animal products and processing, and animal behavior and welfare. To achieve the goal, the curriculum of our Department is designed to emphasize the basic sciences such as biology, chemistry, statistics in the 1st, applied sciences in the 2nd to 3rd, and applied and practical areas in the 4th years. Through these curricula, 75% of the graduates found their jobs when they left the University. Especially, 80% of those who got jobs are working in the animal industry or related areas. We have also intensively worked with the animal industry in order to promote cooperation between academy and industry and to provide more opportunities of field experience in animal industry to students. In 2008, our Department was ranked as one of the top departments in the field of Animal Science, Korea by Joongang Ilbo Daily News Paper, receiving the best award in the year. This reputation was continuously recognized in 2009 and 2010 by the same newspaper as the first and second in the filed of Animal/Plant Sciences, Korea. With this achievement, our Department has been chosen as one of the specialized departments named by the University since 2011.
The research and experimental farms were founded in 1948, the same year as the college was founded. Presently, three farm fields are able for research and field works projects. The Gajwa farm, located on the main campus, is relatively small (26,893㎡), used mostly for small scale research projects and has 12 greenhouses (8,512㎡) on it. In contrast, the Daegok farm (92,512㎡) and the Sacheon farm (48,373㎡) which are located about 20km and 12km away from the main campus are used mainly for students and crop production. Those farms have modern facilities and experimental equipment necessary for the research and education of the students. All activities are planned and operated by a farm director and eight supporting staff members.
The livestock farm located at Keumsahn, Jinju possesses various species of animals, dairy cattle, Korean native cattle, swine, Korean native goats, sheep and honeybees on a 277,269 m² plot of land. The farm is used for the research by professors, education and practice of students, especially those majoring in Animal Science, Animal Bioscience and Veterinary Medicine. It is also used to increase animal production and supply using newly-developed techniques in the industry.

A Research Forest is consisted of Jirisan (Sancheong), Namhai, Gajwa, Goseong, Masan, Hadong, Jinseong experiment forest and Won-ri nursery field and it’s total area is about 2300ha. The Research Forest implements the experiments and academic researches of the Faculty Environmental Forest Science and other departments of major. As a field of practical training of Environmental Forest Science Education which students can do academic practices from theory lesson at school, the Research Forest uses this place for the local residents’ education. This organ examined closely for development and dissemination of suitable species, forestry production technologies and forest management methods. These activities leads this place to the field of forestry education for the local residents. The experiment forest also aims to contribute to the development of the national economy ever achieved by increasing the productivity of cultivation of forest resources and land conservation. This place is planned to create profits and promote a university by selling the by-products and also maximize the versatility and value of forests by creating a beautiful natural environment, the various education training and research facilities.
