The RINS was established in 1984 to improve the quality of education and research on natural sciences including physics, biology, chemistry and earth science. In 1994, the institute was designated by the Ministry of Education as a regional strategic R & D center covering the areas of Yeongnam and Jeju, in addition to Gyeongnam province. In the fourth phase of the five-year research project from 1994 to 1999, seven specialization tasks of the institute were selected by the Ministry of Education for research subsidies. In 1999, the institute was designated by the Korea Research Foundation as a leading institute and implemented specialized tasks. Currently, the RINS has three fulltime research professors and 93 professors with a basic science related field. It receives funds generously provided by various foundations and greatly helps the researchers in their studies on basic sciences.
