Gyeongsang National University (President Gwon Jinhoe) Gyeongnam Culture Research Institute Jinju Studies Research Center (Director Jang Manho) will hold on October 16 (Fri) an academic conference to discuss modern succession plans for Jinju’s traditional culture such as gyobang culture, Jinju Hwaban, Jinju Silk, and somok.

The ‘2026 7th Regular Academic Conference’ will be held that day at 1:00 p.m. in the 1st-floor Main Auditorium of the Gyeongsang National University Museum under the theme ‘Transmission and Creative Succession of Jinju Cultural Heritage.’ It is co-hosted by the Jinju Studies Research Center and the Jinju Culture Research Institute.

The conference will examine the status of late Joseon gyobang literature and gyobang arts, the regional traditional food culture Jinju Hwaban, the region’s 100-year-old specialty industry Jinju Silk, and Jinju somok, which is transmitted as national and local intangible heritage. It will also discuss ways to move beyond preservation to build sustainable livelihoods for transmitters and a transmission ecosystem.

Jeong Byeonghun, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Gyeongsang National University, will deliver a keynote titled ‘Creative Transmission and Utilization of Jinju Cultural Heritage.’ This will be followed by ▲ The meaning and value of the sijo literature included in 『Gyobanggayo』 (Kang Gyeongho, Professor, Department of Korean Language and Literature, Gyeongsang National University) ▲ The formation and transmission of Jinju gyobang arts (with a focus on Gyobanggayo) (Lee Yeonbok, Ph.D., Department of Cultural Contents, Gyeongsang National University) ▲ The historicity and value of Jinju Hwaban, and its current succession and development (Lee Seong-su, Chair, Korea Food Culture Foundation) ▲ The great transformation of Jinju Silk — the past and future of Jinju Silk (Go Tak, Senior Researcher, Korea Silk Research Institute) ▲ How do people who safeguard cultural heritage live? — the life of a Jinju somok transmitter and a sustainable transmission ecosystem (Park Mincheol, Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Heritage somokjang apprentice).

Since its founding in 2023, the Jinju Studies Research Center has held a regular academic conference and colloquium every year. This year it hosted a colloquium on the theme of 『Jinyangji』. It also newly launched a Jinju Studies civic lecture series dealing with local history such as the Hyeongpyeong Movement at the Namseongdang Education Center.

Jang Manho, Director of the Jinju Studies Research Center, said, “Jinju’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage preserved over many years is the root that proves the city’s identity and a precious asset that leads its future,” and added, “I hope this conference will be a meaningful opportunity for Jinju’s traditional culture not to remain a static museum-piece heritage, but to breathe with the present and be transmitted creatively.”
